to carpool instead. and to a weather alert, voluntary evacuations are in effect in laurels tonight after officials were forced to open floodgates. heavy rains overnight claimed the life of a man sleeping in a homeless camp along the patuxent river and tom, you spoke to another man who was living in the same camp and had to swim for his life. >> reporter: yeah, brian and there is no way to put it and that happened in anne arundel county and we're in laurel at this bridge, which is closed most of today of the floodgates up receiver and we're open to relieve the pressure on the dams in the area and leading to a rising tide of water. officials are stationed on the bridge and they're concerned about the 43-year-old structure and the rising weather and the debris striking it throughout

the day. earlier, anne arundel county and fire and e. mr. s. officials tell us they received a -- and ire s officials tell us they received a phone call about people living in the woods. they arrived in the area because one was reported missing and not responding to calls. they transported to another area hotel and another man found dead at the scene and we speak to a gentlemen by the name of mateo. he told us he was living in the camp the next 3 1/2 months and he was there this morning and had to wade in waist deepwater to get out to safety. >> and i woke up about 3:00 in the morning because the rain was coming down so hard and i looked over. and -- thatlooded the whole area. >> how did you get out? >> i walked up. >> and -- . >> i have been here freezeing

all day. >> reporter: now, here in laurel, can you see the police car is behind us and they're trying to keep people off of the bridge. they want to make sure as the floodgates continue to pour water, they're not going to get into a situation where any water goes over that bridge dangers the structure. right now, the evacuations that have taken place in laurel have been voluntary and there is an e vacation and they could change the voluntary evacuations to mandatory. >> and the president's pick for secretary of defense was in congress today. they hammered the former nebraska senator on issues ranging to iran and support for a group abdicating nuclear weapons. answering questions about his support for equal rights in the

months after superstorm sandy swept across the northeast, the cleanup efforts continue and some crew are taking steps they can. fox's rick leventhal has that

a new documentary is telling the story of a legend airy night club where rock, pop, blues, and jazz lived for decades. the about use in georgetown wants to stop for up and coming artists like you2, dire straits and kiss. bruce springstein played the about use closed in 1998 after hosting thousands of shows and creating rock'n'roll memories for an intold number of music fans. it was a tiny place holding $500 people at a time but the sign could knock you off of your feet. now, four filmmakers put together a 90-minute documentary that takes you back. the bayou was in an ole redbrick building in georgetown where it began hosting ducksy land jazz bands.

by the mid-60', the place was packing in music fans, eager to hear rock'n'roll and the plus. >> and it was not like any other place. it was dark, it was cavernous and raucous. >> reporter: bill scanlon loved it there. when he heard the place was closing, he got inside with the camera. >> i think the film captures a piece of washington music history that is little known. and is not spotlighted. yet, it was vibrant. and brought in national acts and players. >> reporter: the bayou was long gone and torn down years ago. in its place was the lowe's theatre and the documentary. in the '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s, if you wanted to see the up and coming rock'n'roll band,

the bayou was good to g. you could have seen duran duran for $3.50. >> dire straits played the bayou as swing was beginning the way up the charts. u2 hit the bayou stage as well, opening for the slicky boys. that were nice guys. >> that is him in the bow tie. love playing there. >> the stage was comfortable and big. sounded grade great. >> reporter: springsteen played the bayou once. a surprise a porns with longtime friend robin thompson. >> there are great photographs. >> reporter: it's a labor of love for scanlon who put it together with three others the last 15 years or so, the funding coming from mainly donations. >> i am proud we stuck with it and happy so many people supported us. our kick start of supporters

came in with over $30,000 in funding and made it possible. >> and that bayou might be gone but -- . >> and that defendantination. i had a lot of fun putting it together. i was a big fan of the bayou and the slicky boys and seeing mark today was a lot of fun and this is 90 minutes long and is going to feature not only the performers, but the interview of a lot of people there at the time, bouncers and the bar10ers as well. >> and that is signing well. is it open to the public? >> not open to the public. people put a lot of money into it and helped them going. -- get going. kick starters and they're going to preview the film and that public can see it. it's going to air on maryland public television on the night of monday, february 25th. i believe that that is going to be at 9:00 at night.

snow for us and this will stick to everything. it's going to be cold overnight and that is a small amount of snow that can cause a bit of an issue in the morning and some minor accumulations expected and it will be gone by mid- morning. again, we're talking about four hours of light snow and sometimes if it, the combinion of temperature and moisture is just right, that can be a coating to an inch. and it will be blustery and colder again tomorrow and, of course, you already felt that bluster out there tonight and that is for sure and light talk about the future cast. it's windy and cold tonight and we have to see what the system is going to do. our future cast is on this for a few days here suggesting that about 6 in the morning, there will be enough light snow or snow showers to put down a small coating. this area expanded since yesterday and might be mixed with some sleet around the colonial beach area. to 7:00 a.m., that is moving out quickly and we're going to look at a windy and cold friday. there might be some issues for the morning commute and we'll watch that and that temperature, 39 degrees. gaithersburg, 34 and that is still windy, some gusts to 24, 25 miles per hour and annapolis to 39 and 25 and that is feeling look 30 in the district, 17 at martinsburg and to fan at hagerstown and might be another round of something fast saturday night into sunday

stroke lead at this time and d.c. united extended the contract of ben olsen through the 2013 season. >> and trying to bring you the efforts to clean up after superstorm sandy is still in full swing. rick leventhal has that. >> reporter: three months after hurricane sandy swamped much of new york and new jersey's cost, the massive piles of debris are finally shrinking, an aggressive effort to recycle, repurpose and protect. >> for environmental reasons, it's important to pull out the items like refrigerators, water heaters. think they're not biodegradable and could cause environmental issues in the future. >> reporter: the army corps of engineers and is working with sanitation&to separate and salvage what they can. >> metal like this will be sifted out and disposed of in a manner to be reused. we have a big piece of concrete here that we'll pull this out. >> reporter: at one site, there is enough wood to fill an entire football field. piled higher than the goal

posts. some will be shredded to mulch and most incinerated. >> burning this into ash will reduce its footprint. like if you were to decide to throw this away into a landfill, instead of 100 cubic yards of wooded did prix you would have between 1 to 5 -- debris, you would have one to five yards. >> reporter: then a woodworker who set up a virtual mill on site to fashion furniture from rescued pieces of timber. >> to have a tree from new york city that the is a table in your house or a side table or can't ertop is amazing. >> reporter: more than two million pounds of metal have been removed from brooklyn and queens alone. in new jersey, some two dozen private companies are contracted to process the staggering amount of debris collected along the shore. as much as 85% of it recycled, despite the enormity of the tag. >> so much debris, it kept coming and coming in to the point our -- where our building where we store the garbage was
